Iskenderun has been founded by Alexander the Great in commemoration of its victory over Persians at Issah. During the Roman times it became the significant trading city of Turkey, and under sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire — the main port, from where the ships sailed away in Halab from whom trading ways went to Persia and to Arabian Peninsula further. During board of Frenchmen it was called as Alexandretta, and now it is a part of tourist Turkey and is big factory, military and shopping centre.
