This Week at MoMA: December 22–28
Create a new holiday tradition and plan a visit to MoMA. (Hint: we’re just three blocks away from the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, and steps from Fifth Avenue’s department store holiday window displays.) Please make a note of special holiday hours beginning this week: MoMA closes at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday; remains closed on Thursday (Christmas day); and opens an hour early (at 9:30 a.m.) every day from December 26 through January 4. So plan your visit accordingly, and don’t miss this week’s highlights:
• Get creative and collaborative during a hands-on Gallery Session at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday by making Exquisite Corpse Drawings, one of the Surrealists’ favorite game-based art-making techniques.
• Didn’t get the gift you wanted? Mark your calendar for the MoMA Design Store’s annual 50%-off Winter Sale, which starts Friday.
• This Saturday take an intimate after-hours tour of Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs led by a MoMA educator. Space is limited (and selling out fast) but there’s still space left in an hourlong tour starting
at 6:30 p.m. Buy your tickets today.• As part of The Contenders 2014, MoMA’s Department of Film hosts Laika Studio Day on Saturday—highlighting the work of this acclaimed animation studio with screenings of their feature films Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls.
• Stop by the MoMA Store in Soho on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and Play with Tegu Magnetic Blocks. Kids of all ages can create their own wooden masterpieces and take part in a tower-building competition.
