November 4, 2014, 1:30 p.m. — Robert Gober: Expanded Masculinity
Sign language–interpreted Gallery Sessions are held every fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibition Robert Gober: The Heart Is Not a Metaphor
Gallery Sessions, impromptu interactions facilitated by Museum educators that explore the creative process, art history, and the experience of art, take place daily in select galleries. This session explores the work of Robert Gober through his uncanny and personal response to the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Groups meet in the galleries noted on the schedule. FM headsets for sound amplification are available for all talks. Using familiar imagery such as playpens, drains, sinks, and legs, Gober dislocates these objects' everyday meaning and functions in order to address themes such as sexuality, religion, and identity politics.
