Combinations of Layouts

Many layouts combine aspects of each type of layout, providing, for instance, net­worked spaces to accomplish tasks within a larger linear framework. The layout in Figure 12.6 corresponds to the story structure of many large RPGs, which tend to offer one major story arc and a large number of subplots or quests. Adventure games quite often use a combination structure too, letting players do considerable exploration in one area before moving on to another. Note the similarities with Figure 19.7 in Chapter 19, "Adventure Games."
