3.1 Introduction
This chapter provides a general introduction to the core statistical data on the selfemployed in the UK. The chapter starts by providing an overview of the self-employed, who they are, why they entered self-employment, their personal characteristics, their jobs and the industrial sectors they enter. A key feature discussed in this chapter is the growth in self-employment over the past 20 years and, although this chapter concentrates on the UK situation, this trend has been apparent in many other countries.
