CONTROL ROOM DESIGN AND ERGONOMICS
LCD Monitor Wall Narrow Bezel
The disadvantage of this technology is that the image format (Figure 4.33) is normally 16:9 whereas 4:3 or 5:4 is usually used. Present-day technology means that there are limits in maximum diagonals. There is also a memory effect with static images. The advantages are: a need for less space in which to set up and operate the equipment, and an attractive price for the quality of the technology. The technology also offers high brightness coupled with high contrast of images. This means that this technology is suitable for video surveillance tasks (Figure 4.34).
The strengths and weakness of TFT LCD screens means that this technology is a viable alternative for use in a number of situations. For example, it is suitable for use in control rooms with moving images, such as those used in video surveillance. The technology can also be used in applications where screensavers can be used, where the systems can be switched off for between 4 and 6 hours during each 24- hour operation, or where the content on the monitors can be moved periodically to other monitors. Some manufacturers have integrated functions to reduce the memory effect, such as ventilation (heat is the main reason for problems with the memory), scheduler, screen savers (running line), inverting of pictures, and panel regeneration modes. Also with a controller and related display management software, the static images can be scheduled to be moved from time to time to another display. However, it is recommended that for professional applications such as control rooms, professional displays should be used.
