I Met My Love Again
1938. USA. Directed by Joshua Logan, Arthur Ripley, George Cukor. Screenplay by David Hertz, from a novel by Allene Corliss. With Joan Bennett, Henry Fonda, Louise Platt, Alan Marshal. The stage director Joshua Logan made his movie debut with this vehicle for his Princeton classmate Henry Fonda. The result was a spectacular misfire that sent Logan packing back to Broadway, and even with extensive reshoots directed by Arthur Ripley and an uncredited George Cukor, the picture flopped hard. Adapted from a forgotten best-seller, the meandering plot follows the bookish Ives (Fonda) as he loses his hometown sweetheart, Julie (Bennett) to a hard-drinking, fast-living novelist (Alan Marshal). She comes home a widow, just in time to find Ives, now a college professor, involved with a man-eating student (Louise Platt). Bennett’s last complete film as a blonde. 16mm. 77 min.
