Doctors’ Wives
1931. USA. Directed by Frank Borzage. With Warner Baxter, Victor Varconi, Minna Gombell. All the ladies swoon for society doctor Warner Baxter, leaving his neglected young wife (Bennett) to feel lonely, useless, and jealous. Enter a glamorous cancer researcher (Bela Lugosi sound-alike Victor Varconi), who promises to bring passion and meaning back into her life. Director Borzage can’t cut through the plot conventions of this early medical melodrama, but he does coax some glorious moments from his performers. 16mm. 79 min.
